The Scrabble Strategy Playbook

Six lessons from tournament play — offense, defense, bonus squares, bingos, the Q, and what to memorize. Read to the end to earn +5 BrainPoints.

1.Offense and defense strategy

Offense is about score. Defense is about denying score. Great players do both on every turn — never one without the other.

Before placing a word, look at what your play opens for your opponent. Did you just expose a Triple Word Score along an edge? Did you leave a vowel touching a Triple Letter square? If yes, your opponent's next turn will outscore yours.

Defensive blockers: short, vowel-heavy plays that fill a danger lane (e.g. AA, OE, AE) can save you 30+ points by closing off a Triple Word column.

2.How to use bonus squares

Bonus squares multiply tiles or whole words. Triple Letter (TL) on a J, Q, X, or Z is gold — 24 to 30 points on a single tile.

Triple Word (TW) plays are best when you also cover a TL or DL square in the same play. Stacking multipliers is how 80+ point single plays happen.

When you're stuck, build toward the next bonus square instead of grabbing immediate small points. Setting up a bonus on your next turn often beats a 12-point play right now.

3.Bingo plays explained

A bingo is playing all 7 tiles from your rack in one turn. The bonus is +50 points on top of the word score — usually a 70 to 110 point play.

To increase bingo odds: hold balance. Aim for roughly 4 consonants and 3 vowels. Avoid clumping high-value tiles (Q, Z, J, X) — they break combinability.

Common bingo stems to memorize: SATIRE, RETINA, TRAINS, AROUSED. A 6-letter stem + 1 hook tile = bingo.

4.Q without U strategy

The Q is the most painful tile to be stuck with. Memorize the legal Q-without-U words — they save games.

Core list: QI, QAT, QIS, QADI, QOPH, QANAT, FAQIR, QINTAR, SHEQEL, TRANQ. QI and QAT alone bail you out 90% of the time.

If you can't play Q in two turns, swap it. Holding Q while opponent scores is worse than losing a turn.

5.Tile swapping strategy

Swapping costs you a turn. Only do it when your rack is genuinely toxic — too many vowels (5+), too many consonants (5+), or stuck with Q + no U + no bingo possibility.

Never swap when leading by 30+ points late in the game. Defending tempo beats fishing for a better rack.

When you swap, ditch duplicates and high-value tiles you can't play. Keep balance: ERIN, TRES, AERS are great leaves.

6.Most important words to memorize

Master the 2-letter list first. It's the smallest list with the highest ROI — every parallel play, every blocker, every hook uses one.

Next: high-value letter words. All 2-letter words with Q, Z, X, J. These transform stuck racks into 30+ point plays.

Finally: common 7-letter bingo stems. Memorize stems, not single words — one stem yields 5 to 15 bingos as letters change.
